The northernmost island, Baengnyeongdo Island is about 178km north-westward away from Incheon Port.
The local people began calling the island, Baengnyeong, which means a crested ibis, white crane flies spreading its wings.
Being located in the northernmost point of Korea, it is just 10km away from the North.
An island that keeps legend of the Indansoo Sea where Simcheong jumped herself.
An island where natural attractions are preserved as it is.
Due to its natural location, sometimes it’s not easy to reach.
Yet its various appeals are attracting many tourists.
Harmony Flower Ferry and Korea King sail to the island apart.
Despite its capacity of 500, they are easily full. Advance reservation is a-must. Checking weather condition is also required.
It takes about 4 hours from Incheon Port, and fare is around 140,000 won. Low accessibility helps keep its natural attraction.

Accommodations and hired-vehicle agencies are well developed. Main attractions:
Baengnyeongdo Island quay -> Sagot natural airport -> Simcheong pavilion -> Mulgae rock -> Freshwater lake -> Dumujin -> Kongdol coastline -> Baengnyeongdo Island quay
Instead of a hired vehicle, we chose trekking and took a north trail: Sinyonggipo port, Donkey troops, Simcheong pavilion, Saja rock, Lotus village, Sahang port, Weather station, Dumujin port
Nearly 500 passengers reached the island at the same time, but the road was not crowded.
It reflected the size of the island. If you want to look around the whole area, it is highly advisable to rent a car.
On our way to Simcheong pavilion, we could enjoy the murals throughout the villages.
It felt as if we were in a small mural-village.
Simcheong pavilion, the background of a traditional fairy tale “Simcheongjeon,”
overlooked the Indangsoo Sea and Yeonbong rock.
It was a surprise that the Indangsoo Sea is not fictitious but real. But what’s more is that North Korea is just across the sea.
The statue of filial daughter, Simcheong,
looked as if she would have jumped into the sea at any moment.
It showed her determined attitude to cure her father’s blindness.
We entered Dumubigyeong road.
On our way, there was Saja rock at Gobong port, which resembles the profile of a lion.
Though we walked a seashore walkway, wire fences were everywhere and it reminded us that this is a military region.
More than half of the residents are marines. The island keeps the tragedy of Cheonan navy ship.
We should always thank their efforts.
After staying a night at a village of Yeonhwa 3-ri, we headed Dumujin port.
Chickens, dogs, and even seagulls kept crying so much that we woke up early and decided to take a walk.
As we walked through alleys, the smell of the sea was getting strong. Finally, Dumujin port showed itself at quiet and secluded dawn.
We imagined a scene that the port would be busy with ships and boats.
We viewed the scene of Dumuji along with the walkway.
You should get on a cruise to see the all sides of it.
It was too early to take a ship.
The trail of Dumujin ends with Hyungje rocks.
Hyungje rocks around Seondaeam, which are made of strange-shaped rocks, were so grand that the pictures couldn’t contain the splendor.
What would be a fantastic view from the sea!
The sun rises over the sea, and the morning breaks.
The landscape became clear.
We took a picture of Unification towers against the sky at dawn.
Many displaced people frequent this location because they can see the North from here.
We hoped good news for the re-unification.
Baengnyeongdo Island, a place that is difficult to enter and come out as well!
2 days and 1 night was not enough time to look around even half of the island.
Yet, throughout the trail, we were moved the naturalness and admired the grandness of the island.
This will not be our last visit, and we will be back with enough time.
