Exploring Incheon Landing Operation

The Incheon Landing Operation was a military operation that changed the tide of the Korean War (6.25 War) when allies landed in Incheon on September 15, 1950 under the command of Commander MacArthur of the United Nations Forces. It is said to be the most dramatic battle in the history of modern warfare. Here are some important places related to the Incheon landing operation.
Freedom Park
Freedom Park, Korea's first Western-style park, welcomes citizens with beautiful scenery throughout the year. At top of the park is the Korea-U.S.A. Centennial Monument built in 1982 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the treaty of peace, commerce and navigation between Korea and the US and the statue of General MacArthur, the hero and protagonist of the Incheon landing operation. It is also the place many people visit because of its panoramic view of the Incheon Port.

Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall
The Memorial Hall was created to commemorate the spirit of sacrifice of the soldiers and the Incheon Landing Operation veterans of the Korean War. Consisting of two indoor exhibition halls and one outdoor exhibition hall, weapons, military uniforms, and images are displayed of the battlefield during the Korean War, showing a vivid recollection of that time. In addition, if you climb the stairs outside, there is the Freedom Guard Tower and the national flags of the sixteen countries that participated in the Korean War.

Yeongheungdo Navy Monument
On Yeongheungdo Island, there is a memorial tower rising high into the sky and a statue of a naval soldier posing as if he is bravely rushing towards the sea. This was created to commemorate the efforts of the Yeongheung-do Navy and Youth Defense Corps who recaptured Yeongheung-do and were the foundation stone of the Incheon landing operation.

Palmido Lighthouse
The Palmido Lighthouse, which was established in 1903 and operated until 2003, is the first modern lighthouse in Korea and the key that led to the success of the Incheon landing operation. On the eve of the Incheon Landing Operation, the Palmido Lighthouse illuminated the path of MacArthur Command Corps entering Incheon Port. As a result, the Allied Forces were able to take victory, which is why it has become a historical site. In addition, the region had remained close to people for 106 years before being reopened in 2009. People can now reach the region by cruise ship, and it has become a famous tourist destination in Incheon.
