Nestled in a quaint village lined with farmhouses stands a modest white building—an independent bookstore, Seejum. The name Seejum carries meanings such as “a new beginning,” “a point of view,” and “a moment in time.” It reflects the owner’s hope that visitors will feel free to explore themselves through their own unique perspectives.
The bookstore curates its collection based on three themes: “the courage to ask questions,” “the joy of discovery,” and “a shift in perspective.” As a result, rather than bestsellers, the selection mainly focuses on books about life transitions and personal growth. The store also offers a wide range of children’s books and picture books, ensuring accessibility for all ages. Currently, around 2,500 books fill its shelves. In addition, if you make an appointment to purchase a book on a weekday, you can also receive a tarot reading from the bookseller.
The bookstore also offers accommodations, featuring three rooms—two on the first floor with bookshelves and one on the third floor. The cozy attic room on the third floor is particularly popular. Guests can stay overnight to fully immerse themselves in a book or simply unwind with the store’s extensive collection.
Dongmak Beach is a renowned beach on Ganghwado Island, known for its expansive tidal flats and numerous restaurants and coffee shops, making it a popular destination year-round. During the harsh winter, when the cold is at its peak, the beach takes on a special charm as a vast sheet of ice covers the entire tidal flats.
Dongmak Beach has a significant freshwater inflow, so when the water level recedes at low tide, it easily freezes. This creates a unique opportunity for visitors to walk on the frozen tidal flats and capture memorable photos. However, it’s important to be cautious and avoid stepping on cracks in the ice to stay safe.
The reddish sunset and the view of the beach at dusk are some of the highlights of a trip to Ganghwado Island. A 10-minute walk from the Dongmak Beach public parking lot leads you to Bunori Dondae Fort, a prime sunset spot that offers stunning panoramic views of the sea and the setting sun.
