Find inner healing at the coastal Gwaneum Sacred site, enjoy a seasonal crab feast, and admire the golden autumn fields. Unwind at an ocean-view hot spring, then end the day at a café watching the sunset over glistening waves. It’s a trip that brings happiness to the whole family.
Among the three major temples of Ganghwado Island, Bomunsa Temple is known as the coastal Gwaneum sacred site thanks to its blessed location overlooking the calm West Sea. Many come here to pray or seek healing. The path from the ticket office to the main hall is a little steep, but each step feels lighter when walked with renewed hope.
The Rock-carved Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, believed to grant wishes, can be reached by ascending 418 steps beside the main hall, Geungnakbojeon. Wearing a jeweled crown and seated on a lotus pedestal, the Bodhisattva cradles a ritual water vessel with both hands, embodying compassion. At about 9.2 meters tall, this statue feels all the more majestic up close.
When you turn your gaze in the direction of the Rock-carved Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the panoramic view of Bomunsa Temple unfolds before you.
Ancient stone pagodas and temple halls, set against the forest and sea beyond, create a tranquil landscape that has a calming effect on mind and body.

After exploring the temple, it’s time to enjoy a hearty meal. Just a four-minute walk from the Bomunsa ticket office is Tteulane Jeongwon, a Korean restaurant surrounded by colorful flowers and a visually stunning landscape garden. With group seating available inside, it’s wonderful for family visitors.
The main specialty here is a Korean set meal loved by all ages. Depending on the featured dish, you can choose from various options such as the Seasonal Vegetable Set or Pork Bulgogi Set. We especially recommend the Spicy Pumpkin Blue Crab Stew made with fresh seasonal male crabs, and the Soy Sauce Marinated Crab Set prepared with roe-filled female crabs. The savory crab meat pairs well with fluffy hot-pot rice made from newly harvested grains, sure to awaken your appetite.
On the second floor, a self-service corner offers complimentary coffee and tea for dessert. Enjoy a beverage while admiring the garden to complete a satisfying dining experience.
On the western side of the island, where it meets the sea, Samsan Reservoir serves both as a local retreat and a popular fishing spot. The calm surface of the water reflects the blue sky and surrounding scenery like a mirror, while anglers relax and enjoy the moment.
In autumn, the fields around the reservoir turn into a spectacle where silver grass and golden rice blend together. Along the nearby roads, cosmos flowers come into full bloom, making it perfect for a leisurely drive along flower-laden paths.
Beside the cosmos-laden path, a pavilion provides a welcome rest spot. Feel the autumn of Seongmodo Island even more deeply while sitting there and admiring the surrounding scenery.
Famous for its ocean-view hot springs, Seongmodo Mineral Spa completed renovations last summer and reopened in July this year. With a new hot spring source and a 100-person capacity limit at a time, the key highlights of its renovation are better water quality and a more comfortable setting.
The spacious cold bath is perfect for children to splash around, while the covered hot bath gives senior citizens a warm place to relax in the shade. The hot spring baths are filled with the cheerful conversations of families, making the ambiance all the warmer.
If you get hungry after hot spring bathing, try the homemade yogurt from the snack bar.
Its clean taste and mild sweetness are refreshing and help rejuvenate your body from the heat.
With cookies or baked cheese on the side, it’s enough to curb your hunger.

The true appeal lies in the outdoor garden. A natural spring set in rocks, a small fountain, and other features scattered throughout add to the pleasure of taking a stroll. Follow the neatly paved path down, and enjoy scenic views of trees, sea, and sky unfolding before you.
Especially at sunset, the orange radiance reflecting off the sea and the glistening light on the waves make the view even more spectacular. It’s the perfect sight to bring your journey to a peaceful close.
